‘The Fragile Load’

“The Fragile Load” is a sculptural installation composed of numerous glass houses, each appearing to be in various stages of deterioration. These delicate structures rest upon slip-cast porcelain bases, their surfaces flocked in bubblegum pink—a colour often associated with femininity, domesticity, and societal expectations of softness and perfection.

This work serves as a feminist commentary on the relentless pressures placed upon women, both within the home and beyond. The houses, symbolic of domestic life, visibly erode under the weight of invisible labor, emotional burdens, and societal expectations. Glass, inherently fragile yet deceptively strong, mirrors the paradox of endurance and vulnerability that many women navigate daily. The porcelain bases, refined yet rigid, suggest the structures of tradition and responsibility that hold these expectations in place. The bubblegum pink flocking, seemingly playful, introduces an ironic contrast—it is a colour often dismissed as frivolous, yet here it coats the very foundation of struggle, reinforcing the ways in which femininity is both idealised and undermined.

By allowing the glass to deteriorate, The Fragile Load challenges the notion of a woman’s ability to “hold it all together” indefinitely. It acknowledges the breaking points, the unseen cracks, and the resilience required to exist in a world that often demands too much.
